Need some advice on how to import *.MAX and .VRML formats/files into Lightwave? Thanks!

You can't import MAX files - you need MAX and export it from there to 3DS or OBJ. VRML files can be read by several conversion tools such as PolyTrans and DeepExploration.

I think PolyTrans also imports 3DSMAX objects though.

I think PolyTrans also imports 3DSMAX objects though.
It does (just as DeepExploration), but only with a proper MAX installation. It only borrows a few program components.

Try Kaydara's FBX exporter and import it in Layout.

Because of the Stack- based system in MAX no other application can read the files directly. The reason is, that any app, that would like to import a MAX- file would to emulate all the tools (including any plugins) that were used in the creation of the MAX- file.
This is why you always need MAX (and maybe even the very MAX- installation, that was used to create the file) to export from.

Question:
Has anybody EVER had luck with the FBX tools in LightWave?
We've tried it both from Maya and Max (all kinds of various scenes, models, etc) and the LW importer always tends to crash, load nonsense or just not work. Seems that the exporter works (or says it does), but the LW FBX importer is a little temporamental...

I use FBX to transfer work all the time - no problems.

Interesting... Its good to hear it does work - With not a single export/import working, we ended up just using .obj files a lot for sharing object data, but then again, we mostly don't need to translate a lot of data anyway since we work mostly just with LW. :D
