Is there a way to re-initialize the SX8 without re-booting?

Yes.
Shut down Video Toaster
Open Task manager
In the Processes tab, shut down winrtme.exe
Re-start Video Toaster
This forces a re-initialization of the SX-8.

Thank You, Paul!
You've given me the gift that keeps on giving. (think of those saved re-boot minutes piling up...)
Dan ;)

ctrl-v-t works for me most of the time. I don't remember the last time that I had to go through the task manager.

Well, ctrl-v-t was added internally as a way during the beta days to allow us to shut down Toaster should it lock up the keyboard and mouse.
The problem with that strategy is that you are forcing a disorderly shut-down of Toaster, and will be greeted the next time you launch with a "do you want to reset your modules" requestor.
