Umm... you mean like an all white background with the shadow under it? Well... make a white ground plane and set the background to white...

Or you can try a bowl-like type of environments. Instead of soup (or fruit) put your car into it :)

Here's what I do for radiosity renders, but it could work for regular ray-traced ones too:
First, I set the background to White. 100% Accept no substitutes. Then, I create a circular plane to use as the ground. You could go with any shape you want, it doesn't matter.
Then, I tweak the surface settings for my ground plane. I set it's color to White, same as the background, but then in the Transparency channel, I add a Gradient, using "Distance to Pivot." Set it to 0%, then add two control points. These points are how far away any given point is from the object's pivot point. Figure out how big your model is; let's use a tank as an example. The Tank is 5 meters long, and 3 meters wide. That means at most it's going to be around 3 meters from the pivot, in any direction. So, I set the first handle on my gradient to 4 meters. Second one controls falloff. I set it to 100%, and say 10 meters or so.
Your gradient should have three handles now: 0 meters, 0%; 4 meters, 0%; 10 meters, 100%.
What this does is give you a handy circle where your ground is, then fades it smoothly once you exit the circle. No horizon line, and you can still cast shadows. It works for radiosity too, just add a dome with luminosity to your setup. Ta-da!
I did this tank last month using that setup, here's a pic of the final:http://vbulletin.newtek.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=188415

*bows down low*

That is a better way then what I was trying to use.

I had a white background with a ground (square ground), but I used a white fog to get rid of the horizon line

note that with LW8, you can now boost your 100% white background.... good only if you use radiosity ... off course...:D ;)
