this is the family pet - harry. In real life his hair is a lot more unruly and messed up. There is a long way to go with the fur to make it look real, but I like this render anyway.

when you get closer you can see more faults. There are some light patches in the face. I think it's to do with the shadow map resolution, but I'm not sure. If anyone with some more sasquatch skills can tell me, it would be appreciated.

here's a wireframe, for those interested. The tail needs to be re-done, also I'm debating how much detail to put into the feet, etc. I don't know how far I'm going to take this model. Probably just some test stuff. Just for fun.

howdy. Yeah, I got a new LCD monitor and I guess it's up real bright. It looks fine on my PC, so I'll have to have a look at that.

I'll post the sas settings soon. I've got different settings for the face, body and ears, which was just easier than trying to make 15 different control maps.

Thanks for the comments.

If you don't have a tv to view your work, try and snag a color bars image online and calibrate your monitor with it.

I think the dog looks good. I've been wanting to do that for a long time, especially after Albee's tut on wolf hair which is exactly what my Elkhound has.

here are the sasquatch settings. the "combing" panel is missing from one and the "shading" panel is missing from the other, but the settings are the same for each instance of sas, so just download both pics, and you have all the settings you need.

These are the settings for the body

Here are the head settings. A bit different, to achieve the mass of fine hair on the bridge of the nose, etc.

Also to Zara, thanks. I would have been pretty stuck without Albee's http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/AlbeeFur/index.html
http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/AlbeeWolfPaint/index.html
and Rowsby's http://www.worley.com/TutFiles/RowsbySas/index.html tutorials (infact I think I downloaded every tut on the worley site). The manual for sas is good, but until I saw how to go about the process from start to finish, it didn't really sink in.

Albee's language may be a little too airy-fairy:

"As capable Artists, our Subconscious becomes more and more a part of our completed works, imbuing subtle emotional commentaries into the pieces that are, in the end, the real Magic speaks to the Souls of the Viewers."

But he does know what he's talking about.

heh, you're funny. thanks for the settings, but you could've just uploaded a sas file, save from the sas panel.:p

i'll check it out when i'm not rendering something else.

thanks again.

Nice job. Just a few things... The nose looks a little too faceted. I think its the bump texture -- it looks like the crumple shader or something similar. Maybe if the levels blended together a little more it wouldn't look so harsh. Also I'm not really a fan of specularity and it looks like that's bumped up pretty high. Makes the charactor look cute but as with any specularity setting. They're fake. Specularity is the reflection of the light source on the surface, and lights aren't that uniform. Its good if you are going for a cartoony look but for realistic models HDRI i think is the best way to go
