I think the plants are real. Think compositing, a normal practice for Arch-Previz.

as riki said, plants are part of the background image, building is modeled and rendered in lightwave then composed to the background in photoshop.

Very nice building, but the grass is a real distraction.

The new grass makes it much better!

Really nice rendering. Only thing I noticed was the shadows on the buildings look a little too sharp (IMHO) when compared with the shadows in the foreground and background.
