I've got G2 and fPrime. The former I bought mostly for the SSS stuff, but otherwise haven't used it much. I've also got fPrime, which I now use a lot. . .

I'm curious if anyone has ideas about when to use which. . .it appears that they can't both be used at the same time (eg it doesn't look like fPrime can make use of info from G2 shaders)

Any ideas?

Fprime in its 1st version is imcompatible wih any shaders (as G2), its a LW limitation and its will be "fixed" maybe in version 8.5 :)
I think you can you fprime as usual - preview scene lightning and non g2 surfaces - when all is ready, go for G2 and F9. No fprime render for now....

I use them both in the same scene sometimes. Normally FPrime is useful for quick overall scene animation continuity and/or checking specific plates for object compositional issues and lighting. G2, at least for me anyways, is useful for detail work where the G2 surfacing attributes are being employed- most likely with reflection, Sub-surfacing, refraction, shading and highlighting as well as some shadow work.

There really isn't a wrong way or a right way- just what suits your scene's purposes. There may be some scenes where neither of these plugs will be effective- like in scenes with volumetric or hypervoxel based effects.
