I've been working on these views of this ship for longer than I care to admit, all vector in Corel Draw. I was going to draw the left, bottom and back views too but I need to jump into Lightwave and figure those out in 3D space. Geometry coming soon. Thanks!

Very fine work, though... what is that thing that keeps flicking about?!

Thanks,
At the risk of sounding nerdy... It's a fin used to aid the ship in navigation. The light on the end of the fin is used for... uhm... lighting stuff up.:)

Wow, that's really really cool! :D Do you have a pic of the real thing? That would be great to see.
Sweet! Newtek needs one of these for express deliveries. That search-light could come in handy for spotting mailboxes at night :)
Cool work, love the vectors

Thanks again... It's starting to take form. The red shape in the middle is temporary.
Veeeerrry nice !
Is that SubD modeling or just plain old polygons ?
Could we see some wires too ?

Okay...Flat... See... Here's the thing...
I consider myself a pretty good technical illustrator and Photoshop manipulator... But, a modeler, I am not. I make all these shapes by gridding them out in Corel Draw first, then extruding them in Lightwave. The precision of the shapes is fantastic, however, organic modeling is very hard to achieve in this manner. Therefore, objects are knifed, skewed, twisted and bent to get close to the desired shape.
My wireframes are downright embarrassing... I will post them if you like but emmm... Kinda scary. :(
Thanks for the positive feedback though!

Freaking awesome design. I can't wait to see this finished.
I do have one question, though. Considering the scale of the ship (if we're talking about an actual ship, and not a toy). Those screws would be absolutely massive.
Do they make phillips screwdrivers with 5-inch-wide heads? Maybe they should be bolts, or rivets, or smaller/more of them. Or some other future fastening device.
Right now it looks like a japanese metal model kit. Still cool, but I'm not sure that's the intention.

Thanks Michael,
I am not sure I can pull this off 1:1 scale, so I thought it would look nice if it did have a model look to it, a detailed one... Like 1:3 scale or something like that. I will texture these pieces pretty thoroughly and hopefully that will give a better insight to the scale.

Now you've done it... I was thinking your mesh had to be very clean for coming out so nice.
Come on, don't be shy, show us the wires ! :D

I send the pieces that I have into layout and play with the virtual camera. It inspires me to fix the bad modeling and perhaps even texture this ship.

If you think your modelling is bad, what does that say for the rest of us?

Thanks you guys. The big trick will be to blend the contours of the cab to the hull of the ship now.

Thanks for al the positivity. I do nt have an industrial design background, although, My dad was an engineer and My mom was an art teacher so maybe I've got a little design sense...
I'm really loving how Lightwave renders and I'm trying to represent it to the fullest. Thanks.

Then extruded in Lightwave 8. The wheel cover rotates to keep the wheel safe when at flight. The arm pivots on the opposite end for "absorbing shock". The wheel turns too... Of course.

Hi,
I really love the cockpit area and the color scheme...teh wings and other parts look a little squarish...but all in all it looks very nice...
i am really curious about ur technique now...i suppose that u stencil shapes with imported splines right? anyways are u usin stencils? and it is so clean (no polys showing) but in the same time i'm pretty sure this arent subpatches right?
very nice modeling
PS if u are using stencils then for sure mesh looks like **** :p but hey who cares when u have such a beautiful finish
Nice work here! It was a great design from the start and now it is just amazing! I love the simplicity of your design but the complex detail really make this shine. The cell drawing is a nice touch you have going and ya your scene shot really can be a motiviational peice :D

Thanks you guys,
It is a little boxy. I use alot of booleans and extrude corel shapes but the main body will be slick and curvy to match the cockpit area. I've not used stencils yet but I guess that is pretty close to a boolean... Yeah?
I'm doing the best I can with the little skill I have and I wish I knew how to make real nice spline cages for a more aerodynamic look... Working on it!!!!
Thanks again.

I really liked the detail you put into your rail car awhile back. Did you model that with the same technique that you're using for this (via CorelDraw)
nice work on this thing, real clean and sharp

Yeah... I've always wanted to model a nice flying vehicle but was not sure if I could pull it off so I did a simple box car first. I was very surprised to find out how easily vector shapes from Corel converted to AI imported into Lightwave via the EPSF loader... The train car taught me how to do some simple textures and model simple shapes... I still have a hard time with precise organic shapes though. Once I overcome that, I will have perfected my technique.
Thanks again!
