Started working on this again after a bit of a break. I just can't seem to finish things these days. I now have 2 weeks holidays so i'll try and finish this. Almost finished modeling. Keen to start surfacing it!

all the flatness kinda looks plain but that will probably change once you surface it... :)

other than that, i like it

what will it be used for?

Nice model. You definatly got some great detail in there. Before I give a cratique on this work of art how detailed are you going for?

Here is a coloured version which is basically just a guide. At the moment i'm in photoshop adding dirt, rust and all that junk.

Nice paint job so far. Definatly starting to look good. I like the way you have faded the paing work on the front of the cab. Makes it look used.

Now then since your modeling a desil electric locomotive try and add some desil exhaust residue. Also since this look really used add some grime which should be dirt, desial, and oil to your textures.

Your Wheels should be mostly rusted, the rail road is to cheep to paint them. The top of the trucks should be polished metal. When you press a few tons of metal on top of any rolling surface a natural polish appears.

Nice job and keep going this is looking really good. Can't wait to see your next update :)

Looks good dude. The work in the wheel area looks pretty right.

I feel like I should be seeing some specularity or reflections in the paint. It seems a bit dull right now... like the paint on a military truck.

dwburman: I haven't yet got to the spec maps or bump maps and i'm not too worried about the reflections at the moment

heres another update. still some work to do with the surfacing...i'm also gonna put in a train platform. At the moment, concentrate on the train and not the scene :D

I can't get the reflections on the trains windows right. But i'm working on it! Tips would be handy also.

They might not look real (the windows), but they look good already :)
I'm sure there is someone who can help you with them :)

I really like the scene too btw :D

Josh,

This is a good update. I like how your making this scene and the details are just fantastic.

You mentioned the reflections on the windows are not quite right. The problem with the windows so far is they have no depth to the inside of the cab. They look more like a mirror. Add some small amount of detail to the inside and turn on the transperency. Once you have depth to the glass wont stand out so much.

Great work so far.

lede, i thought about that and i might just go ahead and do it. Thank you very much for all your comments

NightEye, thanx for all yours too :D

train windows are usually tinted real dark so u should make the windows black, reflection about 20%, and transparency about 30%

then maybe specularity about 50%, glossiness 20%

hope that helps, lookin good :)

looks awesome so far! the modeling is fantastic. the paint job and dirt maps look good, and with proper reflection and spec maps it will look photoreal. the only minor nitpick i have is that it seems like the wheels aren't shiny. on real trains, the sides of the wheels are all rusty but the part that touches the rail is super shiny (as lede mentioned.)

keep up the good work!
