Povray has been open-source for many years now, never used it though.

P.S. Didn't this start on the Amiga?

I liked POV-Ray cause is a good program to start teaching the students about graphics programming, and it includes radiosity, the bad side is that is quite limited. You can animate primitives and lights, etc. but is not a program to learn animation or modeling.
