Has anyone ever tried to create a Flaming sword before? Obviously I want to create fire/flames shooting off the blade. But I'm wondering how I can do it? The flames need to move with the sword or arrows as they fly thru the air.
I'm a noob so if anyone has an idea for this setup please let me know. Thanks.

Hi,
Maybe hypervoxel-Nulls parented to the sword or arrow will do it.
Fire or flame volume (perhaps sprite) hypervoxels offcourse. Maybe several of them for the sword.
Have not tested it, just an idea.

The arrow is pretty strait forward (as tickle said, hypervoxel-Nulls parented to the arrow is probably the way to go.
With the sword though, I would actualy make the blade a seperate object then parent it to the handle. Then I would apply a fx_emiter to the blade and set it to surface so the particles are created over the whole surface of the blade. Then you can set the gravity, HV textures and the rest of that stuff.

Thanks for the response guys. But when you say Hypervoxel-Nulls do you mean making fire from HV's parented to Nulls?
I'm still a Noob.
Also, could this work using the fire tutorial here with Volumetric fire? Could I parent the volumetric light to the sword so the light would follow the sword around? And thus would the axis of the textures ( Procedural: Turbulence) change and thus mess up the effect when the sword moves about its different axis?
Hard question.
Thanks again.

probably your best bet is to use some sub-patched polys that look firey with clever surfacing, then applying some motion designer settings that make it move simlarly to fire. Fire is a very liquid like motion, and I am not sure you could get a very good effect with hypervoxels... but ya never know.

To create a Hypervoxel-Null, just go the menu on the left side of the window and go Add>PFX>Add Particel Emitter. Then you can resize it and parent it to the arrow.
For the HyperVoxals, I would suggest sprites. there are some really nice examples of HV sprite fire that come with lightwave
eg:
Lightwave root directory/Content/Scenes/_Features/Volumetrics/HVFire/fire1HV.lws
If you're still compleetly stuck, I'll try and make a scene to give you the right idea and write a bit of a tut

Hey thanks Murphy. I'll give that a try tonight after work. Will you be able to see the fire from all directions and fly thru it?
