I personally find point by point easier to learn. Box modeling is good, but you can get yourself in trouble a lot easier as you add details.
I would find an object to model (something simple) and try both box modeling and point by point and see which one comes easier to you. Spline modeling is good but I only use it for objects like vehicles or other man made objects that have smooth flowing curves.

Try this tutorial. it might be something you find interesting.
Dino Tutorial (http://creativedigital.bizhosting.com/cgi-bin/framed/3444/Creative%20TutorialsPage.htm)
I'm including the full size reference image that the author sent me since I'm not sure if the link to it there is working yet.
k box modeling is cool for freestyle sculpting i think becuase it gives you the advatange of having ur propotions right ...however i think that immediate results are displayed in point to poitn and when you have a reference image it is the best way.
I like poitn to point i guess becuase i way better at it than box..i want to know box modeing better as it seems as most pros use it
i don't know may be im wrong

well i first learned via box modelling, but now im point modelling now (the cage is such a faster way to work with plus you can get great smooth curves without using the tab key to smooth it all out - which can take speed down to a painstakingly slow turn)
but it really does depend on the user and they're preferance so i use point sculpting that way if its anything organic or rounded i can make something look smooth without a compromise

ooh, whats point by point?

well in Lightwave yo have three options for selection at the bottom of Modeler - Polygon and Point are most used.
Point by point is where you plot out the model or whatever structure you are using by using the point tool to set points down in any fashion. Most suitable for whne you are making things like car wheels or naturally rounded objects such as holes or pipes or things with a lot of bend in them.
Point by point allows the creaton of smooth seamless curves and what not by using the select points and make pol. tools in lightwave to create nice shapes

wouldn't that take forever though?

I prefer spline modelling myself, but I also just started getting into organic modelling so I've only dabbled a little with other techniques. Box modelling is by far the fastest, but you can run into problems pretty easily as well... but I guess you can with any method you choose.

thats true Point to point does take a while but the rewards of using P to P are amazing in fact so good that you dont need to press tab if you are wanting a smooth round shape.
but yes i'll admit its down side is that it takes a while and that you have to select points in a specific order to get it to look right

I prefer point by point for my photorealistic character but i'm also using box modeling for low polygon models like games.
Don't matter how long to finish the model done by any methods. Try learn and play with all methods (box modeling, point by pont, spline or whatever) then you will know which method is the best for you.
For example, I'm using point by point because i'm happy and confident with it.
Splindgod (Larry) using spline because he's confident with it.
Userdelta and Mike B using box modeling because they're confident with it.
If you are not confident with e.g. box modeling then try learn other methods like spline, point by point etc. Keep on practise all methods everyday, don't give up until you are happy with the method.

Can we try and keep things in the correct topics please?

I think that just about covers everything.. what was off topic?

I meant the fact that this forum is called "LW- Gallery for Work-In-Progress", but this topic doesn't contain a work in progress picture.

no doubt it will be moved somewhere in time keep your shirt on
although in the work in progress section it seems to fit because its a question about how you would go about building the models or whatever

Ah, A perfect example of the "Super-Jaded3d-Personna" I spoke of when writing to Werner about wanting some "3d-Community-Synergy."
Thank you and God Bless.
