Hi Guys,
I been working through Riki's Suture site. I was inspired to make my own Soda Can.
I didn't use Riki's model here, but I did learn the Beveling technique by messing around with his Layered model of a Soda can.
Thanx Riki.
This is my Progress so far.

Good start. May want to add some water condensation drops, lip stick marks. Would love to see the final product especially when animated. Animation, Animation some day I am going to be the best at it. Looks good so far.

Looks very good. I love the detail, but I think the metal sides are up too high... It kinda looks like a bowl there... Try making them lower. :)

Hi everyone,
Took some time trying to figure out how to make the etching.
Astro helped me realise that it will be a bump map.
More tomorrow.

Looking pretty awesome...
However, usually the tab pushes down and pops that piece of metal inwards so you can drink... Your image looks like the tab is sitting *on top* of a double-sized 'pop-in' part of the can? I bit strange...
Otherwise the ring looks pretty sweet IMHO. Just that large triangular area feels wierd.
Keep the updates coming! :)

yea make the tab smaller, ya gotta have room to drink!
hey Dave looks great, love the ring-pull.

Hi everyone & thanks for the huge responce,
kevman3d, I can see how it looks like the triangle is an oversized opening part, but trust me, that is how it is on my can of 'Fanta Light'. Would be bizzare though, hehe. Thanx.
Papa0, yeah, the ring pull have grown and grown. I was up till 12 last night. Not the best time to be working. I think I'll take a top photo of the real can and use as backdrop ref. Should fix the problem. Thanx.
SKB875, Thanks for ur support.
Riki, I am learning so much due to ur hard work on Suture. I can't thank you enough. Cheers Mate(Buddy if U from US)
Astro, Thanks for support
More progress today

I think it would look a little easier to read as a pop can lid if you added a slight brushed metal texture to the lid. Right now it almost looks more like a smooth highly polished stone.

Hi,
U took the words out of my mouth hrgigger. Was discussing this with Astro and came to the conclusion that a map would be best way to go.
I realy was only going to make this a Modelling exercise, but due to the interest from the forum, I shall try to do my best with my limited knowledge to see it through to conclusion.

Hi,
Beveled some sharp edges smoother.
Added Brushed metal effect.
This one is rendered without Global illumination as short on time.

Tons better!
EDIT: How'd you do the brushed metal?

Hi hrgigger,
Its just a noise map with motion blur.
Added it to defuse and bump. adding to bump helps break up the reflections.
Here is a scne with the bump and U can see the bottom of the can.
Gona add last bit of detail, then maybe the lable if I have enough time.

i think its a bit too shiny, the cans are nearly always painted steel, and much duller

Hi,
Ididn't know that.
My can is Aluminium. The bare can shall be showing between the images on the label, kinda as the backdrop colour.
I agree though, it is a tad too shinney. I just love the Bloom plugin.
I'll tone it down a tad in my next render, Thanx

go out and buy a can, i mean i live in the uk but i assume soda cans are the same everywhere, anyway take you can and get a knife or sharp object and scratch at the side of it and the paint will scratch off.

Hi mega maniac,
I live in the UK too.
I already have a can. It's made of Aluminium. Its is a 'Fanta Light'.
The can is very shiney. I did already agree with U that my can is too shiney due to the over use of Bloom plugin.
The can I am using uses silver as the base colour. U may see a fanta Light can next time U go to ur local shop.
Thankyou for ur observations.

Wow, freakily cool!
I really dig the specular hilights on the can. Is that HDR environment mapping?
daveythegravy73
10-21-2003, 03:33 AM
Hi FenrirWolf,
I used Backdrop Only Radiosity and yes, HDRI envro mapping.
I gona have a go at a Sky Dome with the HDRI mapped to it later, to see what the difference is. Probabley longer render times I expect.
Thanx for the support.
