I'm sure there is a solution to this somewhere but I found no answers in other posts. I'm trying to add a decal to an object but I can't get transparency to work. I tried just about every file format and alpha channel in Photoshop. Either the alpha option in surface editor is grayed out or I get black where transparency should be. I'm using Lightwave 10.1.

Attached is the logo in question. I just want the round logo to appear, not the white corners.

I'm at a loss here :help:

Works here.

Load up the attached.

It sounds like you are trying to use the transparency channel that is embeded in 1 graphic? Try using 2: your decal, and a separate alpha map

A couple of years ago I made a video showing how to add an alpha channel in Photoshop. This should help you out.

Ok, nickdigital, your file works as it is but when I try to use node editor it does not work.

jlpmedia, how do I use a separate alpha map? I don't see such an option in node editor.

dwburman, that's exactly what I tried and I still get black for the transparency.

Thanks guys but there seems to be something I'm missing.

Works here. Just invert the alpha.

A common mistake when you are new to LW is to think the alpha channel of an image will control the transparency of the surface by placing the image into the color channel.

Only the transparency channel controls transparency, so you need to define the transparency there. Either direcly or with nodes.

Ok, XswampyX, this will create transparency for the entire surface. I want the logo to not show the white borders of the original image. Thanks but not quite.

Danner, can you give me a quick step by step? I'd appreciate it. Note that the logo is displayed on a simple cylinder. Thanks.

You what?

It's there, on the screen above my post???? That's a square that is. :neener:

XswampyX, when I apply that technique to a cylinder, all of the material is transparent wherever the mask is. I'm just trying to apply a decal. Would I have to create a separate patch of material and apply that with the logo onto the cylinder? I must be overlooking something.

Well you never know..... :) If you want more decals you can just daisy chain them together.

Cheers!
