Hows Pixlet fit into the LW compression scene?
Anyone used it yet?

According to specs, Pixlet is only available with 10.3, not the QT 6.4 upgrade. Saying that, I haven't upgraded to QT 6.4 yet, so I don't know if they included it on a whim. The only guy I know running 10.3 is Darth Mole, you'd have to ask him.
On that note, it's important to remember that although Pixlet looks like a good codec for in-house use, distributing files that use Pixlet limit your audience to Mac OS 10.3 users. Not the biggest viewing audience out there, so always make files for distribution with a more common codec.
What's new in this version:
3GPP Support
QuickTime 6.4 now integrates extensive support for 3GPP, including video, audio, text, and native .3gp file format support. Because 3GPP is now a part of the core architecture of QuickTime, you can import, export, and play back .3gp files just as you do .mp4 and .mov files. The technologies in QuickTime 6.4 that provide these capabilities are enhanced MPEG-4 and H.263 video codecs, a newly enhanced AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio codec, an AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) audio codec, a 3G Text importer and exporter, and a user-friendly 3GPP export dialog to aid in the creation of 3GPP-compliant files. This support is now available as part of QuickTime 6.4. Learn more about 3GPP.
Performance Improvements
QuickTime 6.4 delivers a host of performance enhancements. For Mac OS X users, you'll find DV encoding and decoding improvements, providing greater efficiency throughout the DV workflow for users of Final Cut Pro, iMovie and other QuickTime-based applications. QuickTime 6.4 also provides improved playback of both SD and HD streams.
Pixlet
Pixlet is the first studio-grade codec for filmmakers. Tuned for use with high-definition source, it allows digital film frames to play back in real time on any 1Ghz G4. For Mac OS X v.10.3 only. Learn more.
Support for Java 1.4.1
Developers can now create media-rich applications by accessing the QuickTime APIs with Java 1.4.1. Learn more.
Pixlet is there....

My understanding is that QT 6.4 allows the playback of PIXLET compressed files (Mac and Win I believe), but you can only "create" PIXLET files from within 10.3.
- and there's actually some debate as to wether or not "everyone" will be able to compress in PIXLET or if it will only be made available to certain folks (ie: those who purchase licenses).

Pixlet is a lossy codec, right?
Then don't render to it, ALWAYS render to a lossless or uncompressed file format...
If you want to use it for PREVIEWING, as it was intended in the first place, you can use pixlet and see your movie in HD sizes with good quality...

Expediency is often more important than perfection. Never say never. That said, go uncompressed if you really, really, care.
