Go here http://vbulletin.newtek.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12339

there is a link that you will find useful also if you are going to do any image sequences make sure you have after fx 6 as it is the only version to import .psd files as image sequences. Also buy "digital lighting and rendering" by Jeremy Birn published by new riders ISBN 1-56205-954-8 you won't regret it and it has a whole chapter on compositing also if I can find it I'll edit in a link to 3dworld mags bill flemming compositing tutorial

hope this helps

thanks for the links, i found them very useful.
the quicktime movie called 'Multipass Rendering Using the .PSD Format' did the trick.
here is the link for others.

it is essential to know about switching the diffuse layer with the raw layer and then changing its mode from screen to multiply.

although i know how to set up the export to photoshop layers, i can't get it to work.

i keep getting an error message at the end of the render (some 12+ hours) that there is not enough memory for image filters. this is very annoying, i have 1.12GB of ram.

is there any way of speeding things up by rendering each pass seperately.

It should work fine. Perhaps you should try just a few frames and a simple scene to get the swing of it.
You should also try nanogators sliders method

Look in the image processing for Buffer export. You can add as many as needed and it will render a sequence for each.
