Hello, I recently purchased LW 10.1 from Safe Harbor, and I'm having some issues with licensing both the 32 and 64 bit versions.

Basically, when I license the 32 bit version, the 64 bit version loses its licensing, and vice versa. I've obviously tried rebooting, removing prefs, etc, nothing seems to work.

Not sure why, has anyone had this problem or can anyone point me in the right direction? I've opened the license file, and added both 32 and 64 bit keys, one right under the other but that doesn't seem to work either.

I can leave my licensing info on my desktop, and re-license every time I need to switch, but wouldn't this annoy anyone else as much as it does me?

Thanks all,

Jeff

Hm, that's an odd one. What you're doing should work. I even have multiple dongle keys all in one file, both 32 and 64 bit.

Not to be insulting, but you've checked that there are no typos?

No insult taken, and thanks for your response. I did check for typos, and another strange thing that happens is that when I license the 32 bit software, the license key is modified and saved with the 64 bit key,....when I license the 64 bit software, the license key file is updated and saved, with the 32 bit software key # in it.

It's a long time since I used 32 bit, but everything worked ok simultaneously & opened multiple copies of Layout which is handy for rendering with 2 or 3 instances.

Re typos: Make sure you type in the "-" dash between each group of numerals as well.

Thanks for your response Jon, the dashes are all there, still looking for an answer.

It seems, and I'm fairly certain it has to do with the license.key file.

I mostly use 64 bit as well, but have a couple plug-ins in 32 bit I use.

Just downloaded & installed LW10.1 32 bit. I get the same as you get! Re-opening the other file 32 or 64, I need to re-enter the License for each application. A bit irritating if you need to use 32 & 64! Hopefully someone knows how to fix it.

Im running 10.1 32 & 64 fine with both keys in 1 file. Are you guys redirecting configs by any chance?

Not sure If I am redirecting configs. Do I need to consolidate, or remove some of the configs in my User directory?

If you can, please let me know how or why this would be happening.

Thanks for your reply!

Is there a Newtek moderator, or designated forum tech support guy?? I have emailed them a very detailed explanation to user support, but they have not answered after 2 weeks. Not cool.

A license.key is a text file containing as many licences as you need. You can always write one yourself with both the 32-bit and 64-bit numbers in there on separate lines. You can add notes, like what dongle they are for, what OS they are for etc., after the license.key numbers on each line because that's all LightWave will read.

Thanks for your reply Wrench.

As you suggested, I have already tried putting both serial #'s in the license.key file.

However....when I start LW, and have to re-license as is described above....the license.key file is overwritten, removing the serial # data I entered and saved.

So, to summarize, let me illustrate what is happening through an example.

1. I add both serials to the license.key.

2. I then try to boot both 32 and 64 bit, separately.

3. When I do boot (either 32 or 64 bit) after adding both serial #'s to the license.key and saving, it tells me it is not licensed.

4. I go into the licensing under the Help menu in LW 64 bit, enter the appropriate license, it tells me to reboot and everything seems OK,

5. I then boot 32 bit, and it tells me the same thing. I enter the license, it tells me to re-boot, and everything seems OK.

6. THEN......when I go back and boot 64 bit, it is unlicensed.

7. I go into my license.key file, and find that when 64 bit is licensed, it saves the license.key file with the 32 BIT SERIAL, the 64 bit serial is not present, even though it is the 64 bit version that is working.

8. So, the OPPOSITE serial # is saved in the license.key file, after successfully licensing within Lightwave.

That is about as clear and descriptive as I can get.

Thanks all,

Jeff

And you made a file like the one I'm including? Your license.key can't be called license.key.txt so if you are hiding extensions in Windows make sure they aren't hidden for this.

Thanks Wrench. This was the answer I was looking for, the License file I had edited, and that was saving was the License BAK file, rather than the reg entry file.

I realize the fact that the BAK file was saving out every time I licensed kept my focus on editing that file, rather than the registrar file as I should have been.

Attached is an image showing the two files, in case other humans like me exist.:twak:

That's it, congrats CGsuper. To put your mind at rest that I'm not just some rogue LightWave user, I have worked for NewTek doing tech support in the past... :)

I just put the second license # on the next line & everything works fine.
A piece of cake!
Thank you.
