Hi,

I'm a bit unsure about the segment memory limit setting. So far I've set it equal to my RAM memory in MB. Then I read somewhere in Inside LW that it should be set in kB instead, ie much higher, but the manual contradicts this. What is the correct way to do it? And what happens if you set it wrong? If I set it to something extremely high, would the computer start using disk space when it runs out of RAM? On some scenes LW has complained that it doesn't have enough RAM to render, but shouldn't it just do it in 2 segments instead then?

While I'm still rather new to LightWave, my understanding is that if you have a single processor, it's advised to increase the Segment Memory Limit until it renders as a single segment. If it renders in multiple segments, I have observed that the rendering time is usually slower.

I have 512 MB of RAM but I don't set memory segment to 512 (and you should be setting it to MB, it even tells you in the dialog box). If you give it all of your memory, Lightwave will take it depending on the scene. If you ever like to use any other apps while you're rendering at all, you might want to save some for them.

I've never had a problem with Lightwave telling me it didn't have enough memory to render but occasionally I've had problems with LW running out of memory to do preview renders. In that case, I just restart my machine and then I don't have any problems.
