Sorry guys - we've been here before I know. Layout is now quitting every time I close it, and not writing its prefs file - not even making a new one if I remove the old one. What's the solution, again?
just checking, you are throwing away the pref file before starting up Layout, right? Also throw away the Hub prefs
Last time I had that problem I was using OS9 - what's your system?
Do the usual stuff as toby mentioned, that still happens often enough, even under OS X.
In my cases when i use things like Hypervoxels or the spreadsheet manager, or when i deleted and added a lot of objects, than weird things are happening and LW quits crashing.

Hi Ingo,
I had a lot of similar problems in layout when I installed 7.5c.
These went away when I went back to 7.5b. And just to comfort you, this was on a PC.
So if you are running 7.5c maybe try going back to b.

S'okay - I moved the Layout and Hub prefs files out of the Home>Library>Prefs folder, restarted LW and then quit.
I then just copied my old Prefs over the new ones, and it seems okay now... thanks!
noooo! you can't do that - when we say 'trash the prefs' it means delete 'em and start over! If indeed they were causing the problem, they will continue to do so.
If you have a specific set-up that you don't want to lose, duplicate the preference files (when you know they're ok) and keep them in the 'Backup Configs' folder

LW Crashing with Every Use
I am running Lightwave 7.5 Build 572 (April 4, 2002) on:
G4 - Dual Gig
OS X (10.1.5)
Built in Memory = 1 Gig
L2 Cache = 256k
L3 Cache = 2 Mb
NVDA, GeForce4MX
Dual Monitor
Wacom Tablet
I have found LW to be extremely slow with only a modest scene. I noticed the screen redraw in the Desktop Images tutorial DVD lessons are all full surface shades as they manually run through the animations' frames. My redraws are very slow and redraw only as wirefrane as I move an anim through the frames.
Since I don't do a lot of anims this doesn't worry me as much as the following ...
LW is crashing everytime I use it. I have reinstalled twice.
Unexpectedly Crashing when I "F12" back to Modeler, "F9" for a render, select another object in the scene to view, even when I modify an object wjile in modeler.
What am I to do?
I have noticed as mentioned in another comment that when have many clones, LW and Modeler becomes very slow ... just in selecting another object and waiting for a redraw, cloning objects, etc.
If my modest stuff chokes up how do the Hoolywood types move around their CG forests, star fields, etc? Let alone render them!
Time lots of time?
Could some of this have anything to do with creating my own folders for objects, scenes, etc outside the content folder?
Please help ... I am hooked on LW in a big way and need this to work out.

Keep in mind they may have had a bitchin' high-end graphics card in their machine. GeForce4MX isn't even a bitchin' game card. They probably also had a lower monitor resolution, and OpenGL works a little better on PCs too.

no, nothing wrong with that
Sounds pretty bad - all I can think of is throwing away the pref files, sorry. Have you done that?
Or maybe see if it's more stable without texture maps. I've had .jpg's and tga's cause problems.
I'm sure someone else will come up with more ideas
oh yea - you can speed things up a little by turning off 'display motion paths' and closing the scene editor or graph editor.

Toby - seems to be working fine so far. But I'll definitely trash the prefs next time (which probably won't be that far away...)

From all the hype ... and after using MACs for about 10 years now I feel that the machine I have is more than worthy of all the publishing, layout and design work I do.
When it comes to LightWave ... and by the way I am addicted now to LW so I need a great fix ... what enhancements should I make to my hardware to really kick LW in the - well you know turbo boost it?!
Graphics Card? Or should I consider a PC for LW work only?
