It should be somewhere around, but I could not find it: a tool or function that would allow VT Edit to stabilize a film clip. We select a pixel or a small area from a given still frame, and instruct the software that this pixel is 'nailed down' so the whole video clip gets stabilized. How do I do that?

I believe Aura has this feature.

Oh yes, could be it... I believe I saw somewhere Pixel Tracker, that may be the gizmo... Haven't played much with Aura so far, but I thought image stabilization would be part of the DVE collection of VT Edit, just as it is a NLE function of SpeedRazor.

Interesting!
Sadly it does not seem to support VT3 or Speed Razor, and not sure it would worth buying Premiere or Combustion just for stabilizing... Hm...

DFX+ also has stabilization, I highly recommend DFX for any kind of special fx and composition work.

Are there any of these stabilization softwares available as a standalone application, instead of plug-in?

Err, just in case it wasn't clear in the thread above, Aura can handle it without plug-ins -- although there are other applications that do this too.

One interesting such program is Steady Hand (http://www.dynapel.com/com/private/sh_overview.htm) , from Dynapel - they take an interesting approach to this (and slow-mo too) using motion interpolation rather than the more common routes
