That's proof of game development. And not just for rendering texture maps, I export animations into Ogre too!

I use LightWave in Games too! Just not Ogre, I use Torque3D and Unity.

We release the game "Operation Barbarossa" in 2009 at Matrix Games. We used LW for all 3D Models and some render pictures.
Here is a screenshot with some units & landscape:

Look good. I think the main belief is that LW can't be used for animation of assets in games. That is not true at all, one just needs a proper exporter. Yes, they are usually custom built by some frustrated LW user tired of being ignored and whose website disappears in a year, but LW itself is all one needs for a game graphics wise, albeit with the proper exporter.

Thanks. We only did few animations in the project, but all of them with LW. And its a vicious circle...due to the bad support fewer people use LW and than you get no support as no one uses it in games.
I tried to get LW better involved in Ogre with little success - you need a company or coder to stand up for such projects.

We used LightWave a lot with Torque 3D since there was a great exporter for it. We had a lot of LightWave users on my team doing the projects.
The programmers didn't care what we used as long as what we gave them in the end worked. We are using Unity now and it seems to be working great with LightWave. Had some issues with the UV's getting flipped but we fixed that.
I will try and post some models up later (need to get permission first) when they are complete.

Of course LW can be used for game content development. Once you figure out all the hickups, it's easy. It's the road getting to the final asset that's the turn-off. Now that Flay.com is gone it's gonna be even more of a PITA as some plugins are definitely needed to fill the gaps in LW.

What happened to ultra easy UNITY exporter for LW... is there any improvement there?

Yeah, I would like to know that, too.
