Apple finally set a real date.

Our IT guys have a GM build of Panther (we run a LOT of Macs at our company). I'm hoping to do a sneaky install - I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow :)
My friend says it's VERY quick - makes an old G3 run desktop processes like a G4. As an example, you can Minimise Using Genie and it's quick, even with a crappy old non-Quartz Extreme card in it.
Is it me, or is the Mac starting to look like a pretty hip platform to work on again?

Again? You mean as always right?

At the bottom of this page (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9227LL/A), it says:
3) Processor upgrade cards are not supported.
I've got a Sonnet Encore ST/G4 1GHz upgrade installed in what was originally a G4/450 AGP Graphics model. Does this mean that I can't run Panther on this machine?

Even though it says 'Not supported' it's always worth giving it a go - a lot of the time, it really means 'We won't give you any assistance if it breaks'. I managed to get 10.1 working on a 1st generation iBook with hardly any RAM - I don't think that was officially supported either.
Also, sometimes, the card companies release patches to make the new OS work. I guess you won't know until you've tried...

That's what I'm afraid of. :( Guess I'll be sticking with Jaguar until I hear something definite...

sounds wise...have you popped an e-mail to Sonnet to inquire about their timetable for issuing a patch for Panther??
Sounds like, in features alone, Panther is a real jewel, but not if your machine doesn't work...

Triple G, I hear you. I have the Powerlogix G4 dual gig AND single gig. I just wrote Powerlogix asking them what they have to say.

I just wrote to Sonnet, so we'll see who hears what, first. :)

Well, I got my first bad news - Igniter card won't work with G5 due to the new PCI-X slot. $299 to trade my old card in for a new one that'll work in G5.

Sorry - I didn't mean rush and buy a copy and then try and install it. I sort of meant either borrow a copy first, or contact the card manufactuer. Which you have done.

Ok....just got an email back from Neal at Sonnet Customer Service (very nice guy, btw). Basically, he said that even though Apple says that, my system most likely shouldn't have a problem running Panther. He said that Apple is basing the compatibility off the motherboard, not the processor inside...which is why the Panther page makes no mention of the speed of G3, G4, or G5 required.
Still, just to be sure, he advised that it would be wise to wait until something official regarding Panther is announced on their site...which I planned on doing anyway.
