Okay.....just wondered if there is a way to use a quicktime as and alpha for another.
Example: A flame is rendered on black and applied to a plane.
Is there a way to use the same flame rendered white on black to cut out the regular flame. Kinda like how you would apply a decal and use an alpha channel to cut it out.

You might want to look at Clip mapping. You can use a black on white image/image sequence to cut away the object and leave say your flames to add finesse you would have to mess around with the surfacing as clip maps are either on or off ie: over 50% grey would be classed as black.

Sorry I should have said
clip maps are really easy. If you have say a flat plane (polygon) or a box and you apply a clip map (a black and white image or image sequence) then the black areas remain and the white areas are clipped out the result is a flat plane in the shape of your 2d clip map image, but one that can be used in your 3d scene along with all your other objects. If you need to match an image then just map the image using the surface editor and then cut and paste the layer int the clip map editor (object properties/render panel) and then replace the image with the clip map image.
