object motion controlled by displacement (could be motion designer??)

Hey guys!

I want to move a sphere across a displaced plane (trying to mimic a bumpy terrain).
What I want to do is have the ball move along the displacment, going up and down so to speak.

I want to keyframe the sphere from point A to point B along the z axis, and have the displaced plane move the ball along the y axis.

Make any sense? Any ideas?

maybe something like : applying the same displacement to a point, and set the displacement to 'world coordinates' - then it should follow the contours of the displaced plane as it moves - then parent the ball to the point but offset it above so it's on top of the plane. might work!

One thing, if you've moved or scaled the plane then the 'world coordinates' displacement won't match it
