I am trying to model a can but when I do my lathe I alway end up with a circle (vertically) thru my soda can and I do not know how to get rid of it. I consulted the gigantic book that comes with LW and was unable to find a remedy. Please help.

If you're lathing a polygon, make sure that the points lying on the axis to be lathed around are actually laying on that axis. Select the edge points and use set value under the detail tab and set them to lie at 0 on the X axis(or whatever axis you're lathing around).
If you're getting a circle through your model's center, it's because you have edge points that aren't lying exactly on the axis.
Post a pix so we can see what's going on. Personally I would use the Bevel tool to create a soda can

I'm a newbie too so this might not help, but are you using the lathe tool when you have the sodacan subpatched (tab)? I find I get weird circle shapes when I use the Knife tool then.
