Got a present for folks from Scott, our new Mac lead programmer - the ATI programmer he's been communicating with to assist them in resolving the crash bug and testing the fix has just let him know that ATI has posted the fix. Here it is:

Yippeee!!!

With this news I will upgrade the OS on my G4. I also just put in an order for a G5 with ATI card, now that the driver is fixed.

Thanks Chuck, for the good news! Thanks also to Scott for facilitating the fix.

Thanks Scott!
Thank you Chuck!
And thanks to anyone else that helped!

Jimzip :D

Well, back to 10.2.8.. ;)

Beam, you could have ordered a G5 anyway - this patch only applies to earlier ATI cards. Like I said, I have a 9800 Pro and it works just fine. No lock-ups at all.

Thanks for the fix. I didn't upgrade beyond 10.2.4 to avoid the problem so I'm not sure I would have had any problems anyway.
In retrospect I wish I would have helped with emails to ATI and Apple.
Thanks to all the squeeky wheels out there.:D

didnt apple pull 10.2.8 for a reason?

Yeah, it sucks. I installed it on my iBook, and now my iBook sits, powered off, waiting for a new patch. My power management is tweaked, sleep doesn't work right in OS 9 or OS 10, and this is all new, with 10.2.8

Um if anyone is confused, I'm talking about OS 10.2.8, not the ATI patch.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but thought I should say it again here. The Fix is working for me. I've not been able to freeze my system no matter what I try.

Runnning 7.5c on 10.2.6 on a G4 450 and Radeon AGP 8500 card.

*the squeakiest wheel bows... :D  :p

... its working for me, so far, AFTER having to reinstall lightwave once again, and AFTER having spent a day downgrading one drive to 10.2.3.. and customizing AND AFTER getting a notice from the post office that my ebay nvidia card has arrived.

My current working system configuration is:

DP G 4 500
2X AGP
ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition
Mac OS X - 10.2.8
Lightwave 7.5

... this is just one day, but no problems so far.

words I live by:
- always speak your mind
- try everything you can think of to get to the bottom of a problem
- never give up

It seems that Scott (from Newtek) was instrumental in guiding ATI engineers to the cause of the problem.

Well done, Scott!

For those not yet aware, Apple has also patched 10.2.8 for a double whammy.

Updater works!
Beveled the **** out of a box and it was still going yay!
Everyone should thanks themselves, EVEN THE MAYA ppl should thank us..

Do we know exactly what the bug was?

ATI should listen to the boards here much more, betetr showing of interest and wont let bugs like this drag 8 months on again.

Nice to see this. Hey, I wonder if the ATI guy he was working with was the same guy that goes by the handle: MrNSX over in the ArsTechnica forums. Still, this latest fix is a good thing.

Well, before Scott got onto this, the guys at ATI didn't seem to be able to reproduce the fault, or know what it was.

I think users of Maya should also thank Scott, as they are also beneficiaries of this.

Ehm, just wondering about something here. What happens when panther comes out? Will the fix be able to install into panther? I heard Panther was GM yesterday so it's pretty close now!

Ade

What will happen is ATI will submit the fix and apple will impliment it to their build.

Thanks for the compliments, but really, it was all in a days work... :-)

yep.. we knew it would be. and we're extremely greatful you did it. thankyou. :)

.. i have to say this tho..

..it took many of us 8 months of unrelenting posting, testing, troubleshooting and emails to get ATI's serious attention.. that time and the $ value of it as well as the money invested in substitute video cards is still lost. :( .. it adds up.

don't get me wrong.. i've moved on and production has resumed a timely pace.
i just don't think anyone should lose sight of these facts.

Turbo, you were the most active and persistent Lightwave user on this issue. Thanks to your postings and letters a fix has been found. If you didn't do this it's likely that we'd still have the problem.

I think your work has resulted in code changes in Panther. Power to the people!

hehe.. cool  ty
but ... without the technical expertise and encouragement of Varmint, my programmer/partner/sweetie, who develops on mac/linux/winblows, i wouldn't have been able to narrow it down and persue it as determinedly as i did.
He's the one who really deserves alot of credit. :D  :D (hugs to my V) :)
