I am very new to the SpeedEdit software so maybe this is a stupid question.
I am used to using Avid for editing and have been beating my head against the wall looking for an extract tool.
What I want to do is put a clip on the timeline and cut out certain portions without having to duplicate the clip several times and set in and out points.
Hope this makes sense and I thank you for any help I can get.

Just goto where you wan to start a clip and hit "C" then go to the end and hit "C" again and continue down the timeline doing the same. Select and delete clips you do not want then hit Alt-F and that will put a cross fade in between all of the clips.
also make sure timeline ripple is on too.
For simple jobs like this SpeedEdit kick the *** of every other editor out there.
another great trick is goto storyboard view select the first black and press delete and continue to press delete until all of the black spaces are gone as it will auto jump to the next one.

Since you're new to SpeedEdit, you might find the training videos useful at:
http://tv.newtek.com/library.php
Just make sure you select SpeedEDIT from the 'Product' drop down list before you click the 'Submit' button.

An alternative to cutting at both ends of the pieces you want to remove and then deleting each of them as a separate step is to hit "C" at the beginning of the first unwanted segment, go the the end of that unwanted footage and hit "I" to create a new in point - that will remove the segment you don't want and set a new in point where the "good stuff" begins again. "Rinse 'n Repeat" from there, moving to the beginning of the next segment you don't want, hit "C", move to the next spot you want to keep, hit "I", and so on.
