Custom object shapes/"Shapes" or LWO's?

I like those "compass rose" shapes people use for the "mover" object in CA rigs.

Are they a Custom Shape, or just another object?

In Modeler you create the shape you want to use as a curve and send it to Layout. In the Object Properties panel there, in the Geometry gab you use Show Curve.
