I just did a short presentation at the San Diego Lightwave Users Group, on NPR (non-photo realistic rendering techniques, different thread) and in the process, I actually shifted over to demonstrating Blender 2.56, for the NPR aspect of Freestyle (NPR that works!!!), but more importantly a simple demonstration of Nodes in the Compositor. I have a "flow" from some passes (Passes, another topic!!) and at each step along the compositing flow I have attached Viewer Nodes, which allow me to see exactly what happens in each node and if I change parameters, the Viewer nodes update in real-time, wonder of wonders. I have done this in Fusion, now in Blender 2.56, can I ever see this in Lightwave, 10, Core, please. I have included a screen shot. At the lower left the display (large) is of the chosen Viewer Node from the flow above

We had this idea back in 2007 when looking at the node editor ... (note Preview node)

jeric_synergy, Matt, Great to have the response, and no... Matt I had not seen your post, but it is eerily in the same vein as what I posted. I had bumped into this idea first in Fusion, and then using Blender 2.56 compositing it is so fluid. As I stated, I set a Window to display Viewer Node, to give a larger view if needed. It makes tweaking of output so much easier.
I immensely appreciate your aesthetic hand at the GUI and your contributions in all other regards. Thank you for responding here, it give me some hope.

...and Matt, while we're here... are there any plans to introduce your style into the Node Editor in the next LW10 update? I know it's functional as it is... but I'd much prefer to see something that looks like your concept above!

I think having the nodes always available on the left-hand panel, so we could drag and drop nodes, or double-click to add... would be massively beneficial!

Speaking of compositing, DP Filter node editor
have a Viper option, it shows the main color
input of the node editor root, but any kind
of node subtree can be connected to this
input for a fast Viper preview, until you
rendered an image first.
There are almost the same Filters than in blender
for detecting edges but may be not
sufficient for NPR, and no Freestyle.

Denis.

:agree: with Denis. Though it may be sufficient for some freestyle NPR, I think :)
