Hi. My name's Barry.
I got laid off from work (programming) around a year ago. I've been learning LightWave on and off over the last couple of months from the New Riders Insede LightWave 7 book. It's been teaching me a lot of great stuff. I was working on the head of a woman when I decided to try and do myself instead. I'm uploading my self portrait, so I can get some feedback and so forth. And to let people know who I am etc... I'm still learning the texture bump map stuff, so I'm not done with it yet. I hope to have an update soon. For now though, it's just the model. Feedback would be great. I'm hoping to be able to get into the 3D modeling field eventually. I know there are others out there just like myself, and would like to wish them the best of luck... as I would hope for myself as well!
Thanks for the feedback!
B.

Well,
I have the Inside books and I must admit, I've been putting off doing the head tut as I reckon It'll be awful! ;)
On my first glance, I thought, looks wrong, but then I actually *read* your text <sheepish grin>.
Yup, I can see the resemblance already, though the base of the nose seems quite wide compared to your avatar, (I assume that is your good self). Also, it seems as if the eyes are a little too far apart. Of course, if that isn't you - then colour me embarassed :p
I'm sure the more skilled guys will wade in with advice here, but good on ya for tackling a "self-portrait" :D

Did you use reference? Because the proportions seem slightly wrong. Could be because of the camera but... That's why maybe you should post some other views so that we could judge more fairly :).
Overall, it looks a bit flat, if not out of proportion. For my first organic model I took pictures of my gf and plainly modeled her by ref pics. Didn't come out too much like her, but it gave me a hell of a good experience, a bond between rl objects and how to model them in 3d.
Personally I find always a good thing to have some reference, even if I'm drawing objects that don't exist in rl. Not because I lack of fantasy or eye, but because it might tremendously decrease the amount of rework.
Of course, I'm pretty much newbie at 3d gfx myself but hey, I can try some constructive crits :)
Freedik.

Proprtionally, your eyes sit close to the center (top - bottom) of your head. In your model, there is very little room for the brain cavity. Since you have proven that you have a brain, your model needs room for it :D
In addition, most heads have a little "V" shape, top to bottom, because of the skull structure. Even though you may have additional padding in the cheeks and chin, the top of your head is probably wider than the bottom. Looks great though!

Hey there... wow it's been a hell of a long time since I posted... I'm sooooo sorry for not posting sooner... I've been gone for part of that time... had computer problems during others.... and for the other time... that's just me being bad... sorry.
mlinde - excellent point. I'll update my cranium space! :D And I can see what you mean about the top being a bit narrow to the bottom. thanks!
Max Wolf - hmmm I think I just might. It would help express my self portrait personality.
freedik - I'm gonna work on the eyes. As for it being flat... I have a bit of a flat face... I'll post some other shots of the face when I update the eyes and cranium... along with better pics of myself to compair them too.
colkai - Well my husband scolded me for using a poor pic to have you all compair me to... I'll update this with another pic of me. Oh though, I do like the avitar picture. Unfortunately, I don't have the original...and what's online is very small to begin with... oh well.
Sorry again about not getting back sooner. I haven't even had the chance to work on the face. Hopefully I can get to it next week.
toodles!

Hey all, just got back to working on my self portrait thing... still has a way to go... but I've started working on the skin coloring and texturing... "The Ripper" got me motivated to get this done.
Any comments and critiques are welcome! :D

I like the attention to details, but the texture is looking a little ... grimey. Like the character needs a shower. Perhaps try and smooth out the blochyness of the colors...
I really like the eyes&lashes. Very nifty.
By the way, has anyone seen the Ripper lately? I remember he made a smash hit with "black man" and I haven't heard from him since; maybe I'm just in the wrong threads.

Hey Renderingfarmer thanks for the input! I really need to put up a current photo of myself, so people can judge against it. I'm still trying to get this whole thing with alpha layering and pores under my belt (which I think is causing part of the "dirtyness"). I noticed the neck of the model isn't coming out right either. I hope to work some more on this this week... I plan on tackling the wonders of Sasquatch for the hair as well. As for the lashes... I'm actually concidering on re-doing them... they're too big in my opinion. I had made cones and then bent them... I think the cones base width was too large. I don't know though, I'll have to get to that too as well. *sigh* Well hopefully I'll have more by the end of the week.
toodles!
