Surface editor loosing textures?

I've lost some of my texture settings and some just got swapped with others - big mess. Any reasoning for this on known problems? Also, at the same time modeler and layout weren't communicating very well. my modeling changes didn't transfer to layout as it should have. Maybe the hub was sick. Anyway, I must be screwed and have to remake my textures now? Any ideas here or suggestions on how to prevent this again?

I just noticed that images and cloned images in the image editor are gone too. What's up here? How does this happen in LW 7.5c? Must not be a common problem?

So, it looks like LW doesn't make backup files? Would be handy for me at this point.
