Well, this is really the first thing that I have REALLY tried to model. It started out as me trying to model an orc, but that hope was shattered. Now I don't know what you would describe it as >_<. Take a look, and tell me where to go next. Thanks in advance, Sky.
Aaaah well, look on the bright side. You can only get better :)

Well, it's hard to tell much about the model from the shaded view. But, if I had to take a guess, it looks like from this early stage that you might already have too much geometry. It's easier to use as little as possible at first to get the broad shape out first before adding in too much detail. Also, it's good to have some good reference in the background when you model. Obviously, there aren't a lot of orcs out there to take pictures of but you can use drawings of your own or use any number of game or movie orcs as reference. You'll get better as you go. Check out Inside Lightwave 6 or 7. There's a great head modeling tutorial that will help you tremendously.

Don`t be discouraged! You`re well on your way to making an Ent! Why don`t you just freeform evolve it and see where it takes you?

You should also look at the many diffrent modeling styles to see which ones might fit your mode of working best. I started using box modeling methods and had some fair models, but I found the "point-> extend" method worked best for me on tight details. Right now I use both methods for diffrent body parts etc.
My point? Do some tutorials (like the ones in Inside LW 7) and find what works for you. The best way is the one that works for you and not to just keep knocking at the wrong door.

Hello!
Maybe you should buy book wroten by Dan Ablan called Inside Lightwave 7. There is chapter about making a face. I know you want make a alien or something like that but in this book you have part about how to model lips, ears and other stuff. If you want i can send to you some tutorial as a html how to make a face. If you want of course.

hm... So it didn't turn out looking like what you started modelling.
How many people here have started out to make one thing, and then the final product turned out to be something different? ::raises hand::
How many have had a project turn out *better* (either better looking, or more appropriate looking, or inspire a whole new line of thought,) because the model changed in the course of creation? ::raises hand::
Whether it finished up looking like an orc (from the LoTR movies?,) keep in mind a few things.
1) it's still a good-looking model
2) orcs don't exist; the LoTR movie look is someone else's interpretation of what orcs would look like. Your interpretation would be just as valid
3) you have the opportunity to step back, look at what you've created, and try making it conform more to the movie orcs. It's not too late.
4) even if you don't try conforming it, you've gotten valueable practice and learned valuable lessons in facial modelling. You can apply them to your *next* attempt at modelling an orc.
You should see my first attempt at modelling an Everquest gnome!
