Probably with hypervoxels... Flames are very difficult to simulate...

you would pay me to do it for you?
:)
....just kidding,...you could parent an emitter to the sword, or make the sword the emitter and use HVs...there is a great preset Newtek has to use as a start....HERE (http://www.3dink.com/firenew.avi)is a sample slightly tweaked.

Here is a sample (http://www.3dink.com/morefire.avi) tweaked that could work for a sword...

Well, start with the sword. That shouldn't be that hard, once you get that done, we'll work on the fire. "LightWave Applied 5.6" has a good tutorial on making a sword.

Flamin' 'eck !
I wouldn't wanna hold that thing, the rear facing spikes would slash you hands to bits.

For flames, you can go many routes, from HV's to modelled geometry. Are you expecting to move the sword, or is it a single image project? That would have a bearing on your choice.

If it is just a still, you could even just comp in the flames in something like Photoshop / Dfx / Aura etc..
