Hi everyone,
I have decide to work through the Z car tutorial in order to improve my lack of modelling skills.
I have reached the part where I have to Freeze the mesh, but decide, with alot of help from my new buddy on the forum, to model the detail into the SubDs rather than Freeze and drill.
Here is my progress to date. I shall post my progress each day till I finished.

Hi,
I am doing the Z car Tutorial on Newtek.
I am using Sub patches. I have decided to start from scratch, using the Lewis tutorial, but still using my Z car reference material.
I found the Subpatch technique too advanced for my level. Plus the Lewis tutorial looks rather comprehensive and I want to make the interior also.
I shall post my progress each day as I go along, so stay tuned.
Thank for the comments. Look forward to hearing more as I go along.

Here is todays progress.
I have finished basic splines and started the wheels, just to have a short break from splines and to give myself a fuller picture of my model.
Next, I shall be adding more splines inorder to cover all of the major creases and bits of detail. I not sure if the Lewis tutorial covers different techniques for detail, but I gona put those splines in anyway. I can always take them out later if need be.
All comments and crit/tips are welcome.

Hi,
I am posting tomorrows progress tonight, so that I have more time to work tomorrow.
I found a good Tyre tutorial on a German site. The instructions are in German, but the visual cues were easy to follow.
I have lost the link, as the Tut. was this thing called a Viewlet, but I got the Link through CGtalk, so I'll check it out when I have a moment.
Anyway, here is my tire. I may rework it again as it is my first attempt. As allways, any comments, critt/ tips are welcome.

I seem to remember a good thread on tires in the Old Lightwave forums.
Check this pix by Phil

There's also a mini tut which would be good to migrate across to the new forums.

Yeah, I saw that. Nice result, but I didn't like the workflow.
I was looking for a faster solution that would result in a continues mesh that would not have the tred added on as seperate ellement, but rather an intrecal part of the mesh.
I wanted to have that sort of injection molded look where you can see the tred on the interior of the model as well as the exterio.
Looking at that image above though, I now have a bench mark level of image quality to strive for when I come to rework the mesh of my tire and add detail.
Thanx

Hi there,
Done some work on the Alloy. I still need to round off the edges. I have seen a beveling technique in the LW Manual, so I shall try that today, and then if I have enough time, get down to spline building again.
Here are 2 images. Both are done with the background Only radiosity setting. The second image has some surface settings, to fake HDRI lighting. I shall do a render using HDRI later, but I like to set it up using a dome and having it unseen by the camera so that I can still have a white Background colour. Rather than using the Image World background imaging, I prefer to put the HDRI image on the Dome, so that I have more control.
As ever, all comments and crit/tips welcome.
Thanks for the comments so far.

Looks great! I love the tires. :)
The only thing that looks kinda of messed up is how the rim attaches... It looks like it needs to be longer(?) or something like that.
Anyways, Keep up the GOOD work!

Yeah, I gona rework the whole thing once I finishes the car body.
I wanted to have a go at the wheels so that I would have a visual cue while modelling the body.
I have no progress to post today as I discovered the preset central website yesterday and was experimenting with Hypervoxels. I also found some detailing vids that should help me out with my modelling.
I expect to get back on track with splines today, so I should have something to post later today.

After a few hecktick day trying to setup a home newtwork, I am back on the ball with my Z Car, using the Lewis Tut.
I have already posted my splines progress. I am now patching the splines and gradualy building geometry.
All new to me, so I am taking my time, but shall not give up.

Hi there Folks,
Here are two more pics of my progress.
The second pic is here to show a new technique that I am working on (well, new to me that is). I have used Blochi's Thickener Plugin to kinda extrude the Panel so that it has an edge, as u would expect on a real panel.
I have been experimenting with the Weights tool in point mode, to get those pesky sub patches to sharpen up at the corners. I think that with some experimentation I can get the technique smoothed out.
If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this technique, or an easier way to acheive the same kind of solution please speak up.
Thanks for any comments, crit/tips.

Hey, welcome back Astro.
I been perfecting my technique in building panels for the Z car.
My challenge was to create a smooth panel with depth and sharp edges using Sub Patches and without Freezing. I think I have acheived this with the next image.

Hi Max,
Thanx.
I have come to a decision. I am going to have a break from the Z car for a week or so in order to improve my modelling skills by going tthrough this site systematicaly...................
http://www.suture.net/tutorials/modeling/page02.shtml
I shall go through all of the techniques and then work through the 3 Tutorials at the end. Hopefully is ahall come out the other end a better modeller.
Then, I shall continue the Z car hopefully with renewed enthusiasm.
Oh yeah max, didi U say earlier that U had trouble building the Z Car. I recommend the site above and the Lewis Tut, if U having trouble.
