Use a clip map. 1 polygon and looks great.

Check out BeeVee's latest interviews on newtek-europe, there are some free low-poly and very effective trees with Dave Tracey's interview, and he explains a bit how they were made and how to use them.

I left the link out so that they could enjoy the benefits of a good browse through the site and see the rest of the interviews and freebies aswell.
Try this method of using two flat Polys with clip maps

There is also some good trees in your object directory that came with LW. Check the urban directory.
