I'm almost finished with a model and the last thing I need to do is put a "G" in the cover cap of a hinge but the speed boolean/boolean won't work!! I imported and illustrator file, extruded it and put it over the area where i wanted to carve it out of the cap. when I select speed boolean or subtract boolean, nothing happens OR just a circle is subtracted. I never have really understood how to make the boolean work. any suggestions?
thanks,

I want to say: pick the cutter, apply the boolean.
IF that doesn't work, switch it around.
Have to pick something, though.

Try putting some cuts through your geometry where the G will go. Lightwave does not like to boolean complex objects out of a single polygon.

In addition to what lertola2 said you could try doing a stencil instead of a boolean. After you stencil your G onto your cap you can then do a bevel on the G.
