Is there any tool to set a gradient weight map? I was thinking of something like the measure tool in modeler, that we could set the start and end value, and draw a line over the mesh/selected polygons and it would assign values to the points with a gradient.
tx, cheers

and it could have a 'math' menu were we could choose to 'add', 'subtract','multiply', 'divide','inverse', etc the new gradient with previous values

TrueArt's Modeling Pack http://modelingpack.trueart.eu tool VMapProcessor allows building weight and other vertex maps using custom Node Editor

- in Modeler click on Map -> Weight -> Weights
- in the numeric panel set the Falloff to Linear
- draw the falloff area with RMB
- set Change to 100% (or something other than 0) and click Apply

dee, thank you so much for this tip. I'm pretty sure this has been there since ever, but I had no idea. Not quite what I'm asking for, but pretty close.
It looks like it works in 'add' mode. we should have a 'replace' mode too

That is a really handy tip, For years I had been setting part to 100% and then using FI's WMapBlur (http://www.lwplugindb.com/Plugin.aspx?id=b1110c24) plus a lot of guesswork.
Glad I could help guys. :)

What about this:
Slide Weights
Allows you to Add, Subtract, Multiply or Divide a weight map's current values.

Ken Nign has other weight plugins, too.
