Lightwave uses a TCP protocol (of some kind, I am not sure on the specifics) to allow it to exchange data via the hub, from Modeler and Layout. You need to allow the software in your firewall, which normally tries to 'stop' Lightwave. It's not actually connection to the 'internet', it's just an internal connection, but it uses the same basic concept.

Most Firewall software will notify you if software is trying to connect to the internet, and give you the option to allow or deny it. If not, check in the advanced settings area, and allow the software to connect to the 'internet'

I strongly recommend you run your computer with a firewall! :D

yes,the comodo firewall is free and good.
i try other firewall, and allow LW to connect to the internet,LW runs normal(pc connect to the net or not).
but the comodo firewall,i allow or deny allways, the problem has happened(not connect to the internet).if my pc connect to the internet,LW was normal.

None of my PC are connected to the internet. But when installing Lightwave for the fist time. You have to “Allow” to connect to the internet. Even though in my case this is not actually happening as there is no internet connection. All of my PCs have been ok without any internet connection.

As Tobian said:

If you are using Windows 7 run the application in admin mode and see if that helps
Also look at installing the key file in its default location and that has helped me when I did not have internet connection
