View Full Version : Zi8 .mov files audio issues

I'm using some footage from the Kodak zi8 shot at 60fps at 720p. The footage has no audio when put into speededit but plays fine in media players. When converted to .avi from .mov, the audio is there, but I hate to have to add an extra step and lose a little quality in the switch. Does anyone know of a fix?

Yea.. same problem here.
Odd thing is that the files from the Zi8's older brothers, the 720p Zi6 or Zx1 play fine.
Awesome little cameras though. Much more option laden than the Flips but with none of the hip recognition. I love that they added a stereo mic input.
You may have seen this done online, but I super epoxied a 37mm thread ring on to mine which now allows me to add any 37mm filter or lens. Between that addition and the better stereo mic, it's now REALLY a powerful bang for buck. I just wish we could get full SE compatibility.

It does work.... :scratch head:
I have my VT/SE system set up in a dual boot. All Newtek and production software on one side, all games and play on the other.
Just for the heck of it I tried to launch Speed Edit from the Games side and it started with the 15 day trial. I threw the Zi8 clips on the timeline and VIOLA.. audio works perfectly.
So it must be a codec thing. I don't know what I have installed on the game side that allows it that I don't have on the production side but I'll try and find out.
So.. good news.. I think.

I'm trying to figure out why it works on one partition and not the other and THOUGHT it was a codec thing but just realized....
Even though I am booted up and running the OS on my 'Games' side of the partition, I am reaching across to the 'Production' side of the partition and clicking the SpeedEdit.exe that is installed there to run Speed Edit. I did not install SE on the Games side. Thus the 15 day countdown.
Sooo.. wouldn't SE still be reading the codecs that are installed over on the Production partition, since that is where it is officially installed? Or would it be reading them from the Games side since that is where I am running it from?

I'm having similar issues. When I bring in .MOV files from a Zi6, there's no audio. I'm using SE 1.5.5 on a Windows XP machine. I've tried more than one machine, installed numerous uber-CODEC packs on both -- along with Quicktime. Still nothing.
And, as others have mentioned here, simply double-clicking on the .MOV files plays them back in Quicktime perfectly -- audio and all.
Has anyone figured out a definitive solution to this issue?
Cheers,

Kodak uses a .h264 codec (which is part of the MPEG group) for their .MOV file format. Now because of this, it means that MPEG codecs can come in various different flavours. I put a posting up a while back explaining the way this works simple terms:
http://forums.newtek.com/showpost.php?p=1052379&postcount=2
Because of the mpeg configuration choices available to manufacturers, Kodak has, it seems, done something to their codec that limits the usage of it to media players and their own editing software.
The only real solution is to transcode it to an intermediate codec (like SpeedHQ) by using SE or maybe VirtualDub, into a file that SE likes then using that file to edit with.
Ever since HD came about, this has become a very common problem, especially with AVCHD and one that hasn't been resolved through standardisation. All manufacturers seem to want to tie you into using their products and their products only.
It's a real pain for the creative.
Until consumers start putting their foot down and the market acknowledges consumer dissatisfaction, we have to resort to transcoding, transcoding, transcoding to get around the problem.:cursin:

If you can make a clip with audio available to me, I'll check into it.

I was able to get one 1080p clip from another user and the current "work in progress" build of SE does play the file correctly.
I'd say it's a pretty good bet that the next update will play the files if this one example is anything to go by.

And when... pray tell, do you estimate that this aforementioned new may be downloadable to we external beneficiaries... I mean is this gonna be a Christmas Gift from NewTek?
Mutley.
There's a network connection under my tree. Lots of my gifts will be coming in through there.
