ok,.. This is what I worked out for my problem with ATI, OS 10.2.5 or higher and lightwave..

I want to boot from an external firewire HD! Can I do this?

I have a powerbook, so I cannot add an internal.. But I DO have an external Lacie drive, wich I would like to use for booting a system 10.2.4 That would let me work with Modeler without problems..

The only thing is... CAN? I boot from an external disk via Firewire?

Ok! I've done it!! I tried to do this way back, but it did not work! now it seems that I had to install OS 10.2 on a clean disk, so I reformatted my 80 GB external harddrive and now the OS installer DOES recognise the firewire disk as a bootable disk!!

Way cool! Now the only thing I have to do is boot the right disk when I want use Lightwave!!

But!! It is still a backdoor! and should not be like this! Newtek, ATI and Apple should fix the bug, and fast..

I did nearly exactly the same thing, installed 10.2.3 on my external FW drive, and booted in. I can't remember what happened, but something didn't work, so I just use it normally now(10.2.6). I haven't had the bug for a few months either.

ge-4ce,
why don't you partition the main drive?
two boot partitions. I did that a while ago, works great.

Any takers on testing the new patch, to see if it deals with the ATI/Modeler bug? 10.2.8 just released, available in your software update.

FYI: I don't recommend being the first person to try an update. But, if you are desperate to model, I guess you can't lose much, right?

problem is.. I tried to do that a while ago.. but this only works when you do a clean install yes? So I don't want to mess up my current system.. I don't want to lose mail, adresses, mostly stuff that you forget to backup and miss when you need it!..

btw, my only backup solution is gone (indeed the 80 gb external firewire..)

in the info there's nothing that says they fixed anything that has to do with our problem..

let say.. Opengl, ATI, display, 3D,.. nothing of these subjects.. :( what a bummer..

I'm really sick about this..

Well, it mentions "enhanced functionality and improved reliability for...Graphics, OpenGL..."

Whether or not this is the answer we've been waiting for is not something I care to be a guinea pig to find out. Until someone (Apple, ATI, or Newtek) comes forth and specifically states "this is the required solution", I'm gonna stick with 10.2.4. I learned my lesson the hard way in the past, and don't intend to have it happen again.

I contacted an Apple Authorized Repair/Reseller asking about purchasing a GeForce FX 5200 through the repair channel, as a replacement video card. Other than the fact that it is backordered into October, they were more than happy to offer to sell me this card. As I had already placed an order for a GeForce 4 Ti (which I think is a better processor than the FX 5200, and has more VRAM), I didn't order, but it would be a good option for anyone who is sick of the ATi issues and doesn't want to gamble with eBay (sorry Turbo). I can't guarantee any prices for anyone, but I was quoted at $100 + tax for this card, so if you want to try and solve the ATi bug via a new, inexpensive nVidia card, try this kind of channel.
