is truespace really dead? is it ever coming back? i just downloaded it a couple of months ago. i was planning on using it but i read somewhere that microsoft actually shut it down last year and all support will be suspended. the software looks pretty developed. so does anyone know is there going to be any future for truespace? is it gone for good?

I'm afraid it's gone for good. It was the first 3d software that I used back in the day, so it's kind of sad for me. The good news is that the latest version was release for free, with all the tutorials and resources.
Is it just me or does it seem like Microsoft like to buy up 3d software and then let it collect dust or kill it altogether. They bought Softimage and then sold it, trueSpace they bought (IMO to compete with Sketchup), and then killed... what's up with dat?

Mac does it too....poor Shake...from UNIX to Windows to MAC, from $10,000..to $5,000 to $500 to DEAD!
Oh well least we have NUKE now. But having a top-shelf Comp package for 500. clams was pretty sweet!
whoops...OT....R.I.P. Truespace.

Well MS didn't buy SI to kill it. There's quite a lot of work that took place whilst they had the company in their charge - a quick look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softimage_(company)#1994_-_Microsoft_Softimage will highlight some of that.
Now MS' intentions were, as usual, to pin something professional to their NT OS in order to try and stem the tide of Unix in CGI and related fields. It's a shame that they succeeded in hobbling XSI so that its Linux port was (perhaps it still is - it's been a while since I tried it) so flakey because of the MainWin life support system that it needs. That same MainWin legacy effectively prevents anyone migrating the application to OS X, based on comments from both Avid and Autodesk when they have been asked.

Yep, MS disbanded the truespace dev team. The best place to get answers to truespace questions is the forums here:

MS also canned other projects like ICE (panorama stitching application) at the same time they stopped work on Truespace. But now ICE has been revived and a major bug was fixed (program "fell asleep" and required a mouse click to continue) , so who knows.

Well trueSpace wasn't exactly the love of my life, but I did start my 3d adventure with it. I gave it up at version 2.0 and learned to use LightWave because TS wasn't accurate enough for my usage.
