Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, clues on how to make a metal object have worn edges....say a metal object painted white but the paint has worn off over time around the edges....any ideas?

An alpha map... on the edges is would be missing color...
Then if you apply a texture map to the object you could use the alpha map to not apply that texture at certain spots... These spots are your corroded spots...
In the surface editor:
Layer 1: Paint
Layer 2: Alpha Map
Layer 3: Bare metal

Hi there
er EKI has a tutorial on sufacing a spaceship (it's for lightwave 5.6) but it might be helpful www.kolumbus.fi/erkki.halkka/Tutorials/Surfacing01.html check it out

edgefx is good for doing these kind of effects, check this out:

If your mesh is dense enough around the edges, then I'd recommend using a weight map in conjunction with a gradient layer to use as the alpha channel that richpr was talking about - much easier to adjust and get feedback on.
There's a tutorial on my site here:

But what is there is no "paint" layer per se. Like this....say the surface is white metal. The I want the edge to be worn away so it would be silver. So testing purposes we'll just say a box with microbevels on the edges. So I want the edges to be worn but the rest of the box is white....so it would be like almost two surfaces....? A white metal and a chrome metal? Am I not getting this right?

For what richpr and myself were talking about, you'd only need one surface.
The surface would have three layers in it. The bottom layer would be the 'worn' metal texture, and the top surface would be the 'unworn' texture. Your middle layer would use the Alpha blending mode to act as an alpha channel, and would be either a gradient layer (using a weightmap as input) or an image layer.
