I'm planning on purchasing a new powerbook in the next two months, mostly for use in visiting clients. As an aside, I am hoping to be able to use Lightwave on the new machine. How does it perform? Does the ATI problem extend to the Titanium powerbooks graphics card? I am planning on getting the 15.2 inch (when the new model is announced, according to rumors it will be soon) and hoping it comes with the Nvidia card, just in case.

Thanks

I'm using LW on a Titanium 1Ghz 15". I love it. No problems. Because of the boards I have NOT updated beyond 10.2.4 and I'm running 7.5b not c although I've seen a workaround for installing c but just haven't done it yet.
Overall I think you will not be disappointed. Hint tho: Get a second monitor.
Good luck!

I'm using 10.2.4 on my twoer G4 right now, because I have a radeon 8500 card installed. I'm confused about your 7.5c statement though... Is there a powerbok specific reason you cannot use 7.5c?

Thanks for the reply

I don't think there's a reason I can't use "c". I guess I'm getting into a "if it ain't broke don't fix it mode." I haven't heard what "c" is supposed to have fixed that effects me. I just thought I'd let you know what I was running.
Rock on.

I have the 1ghz 15" PowerBook and LightWave runs great on it.

Just don't update to 10.2.6 'cause it hoses Modeler on the PB's that have the ATI cards.

:(

I need to go back to 10.2.4 at some point cause I can't get any work done in Modeleing on my PowerBook.

ATI, NewTek and hopefully Apple are aware of the ATI OSX freezing issue we 3D people are experiencing.

Thanks a lot for the replies!

Looks like the 15inch only comes with the 9600 hundred... Kindof a bummer. I was hoping to get away from the radeon bug with my new machine...

I've tried them all at the Paris expo.
I find the 12" very nice, but it have no fw800, some slower systembuss, only one memoryslot, no keyboardlight.
Damn hard to choose between the 12" and 15".
I was hoping apple would have made a more serius Pb 12", but now I might have to get a big and heavy 15"

I have a 15" that is niether big nor heavy. I actually can't imagine working on a smaller screen than 15", but to each his own.

BTW, I put 7.5c on and all seems to be working fine. I've stayed on 10.2.4 however.;)

On a completely unrelated note.... Hey Kite! I did my first huge air kitesurfing last week! 15 feet high off the water!

Going to check out the new 15inch today at the Apple store. Buying in about two weeks!

It was sorta soft ;) I oversteered on my take-off and landed on my side. I've landed some smaller jumps since though!

Funny thing about Isabel. I was watching a newscast the other night. There was a reporter standing outside near a beach talking about how the area was completely deserted. In the background of the shot you could see a kitesurfer cruising!

Went to the Applestore to check out the new 15inch books today. They look really nice. I did some performance tests too, but they didn't have Lightwave. When I get my machine I'll crash it a few times just to be sure the radeon problem is still there! Hope they fix it soon.

Tumblemonster, I see that configuration comes with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. You may want to run some tests first, but I have a feeling that you're going to run into problems there. FCP4 requires 10.2.5, and Modeler freaks out with ATI cards and anything higher than 10.2.4. You may want to consider partitioning your hard drive and installing 10.2.5 (or 10.2.6) on one for FCP4, and installing 10.2.4 on the other for Lightwave. Hardly an ideal solution, but at least you'd still be able to use all your software, and I'm afraid it may be your only option until ATI/Apple/Newtek manage to get this bug worked out.

Yeah, I kinda assumed I'd run into the ATI bug. I have a Radeon 8500 card in my desktop machine. For now I may only do Layout (no layout problems if i remember correctly) stuff on my laptop, and stick to modeling on my desktop machine (which has 10.2.4). Partitioning is also an option, but not one I like. I think the 10.2.7 that comes with the new powerbooks has functionality they require. I'll do some tests and see what happens, and let you all know.

And hey, maybe I'll get lucky! Chuck mentioned in another thread that ATI is working on it, and the ship date for my powerbook is showing at least 4 weeks. Maybe they'll fix it by then! (oh, the optimism...)
