View Full Version : how not to share image maps across objects?

Greetings All,

A bit of a newbie question.. I haven't used LW since v1 on the Amiga, so I'm a bit out of it. I've searched this forum, but was unable to find quite what I'm looking for..

I have a box with a label on it. The image map is a jpg with a picture on the left and text on the right. Looks great in modeler and layout.

If I create say, a shelf, and place multiple boxes on the shelf (load object into layer x 5), the label orientations alternate. Every other box has the picture on the right and text on the left. The text is readable (ie, not reversed), so it seems like there is only one instance of the image being shared across the multiple instances of labels (did that make sense?). It does this both in modeler and layout.

Is there a way I can specify one instance per label (if this is truly what is happening?).

Thanks all

It sounds like your duplicating these boxes in modeler right? From what I understand about your situation it seems that each box shares the same surface. When you duplicate the box and move it next to a box you allready have, it will "slide" the texture across to and stop when you finnish moving the box. This only happens when your in modeler using certain types of mapping (ie Planar, Cubic, etc..),
Also, I think you might have "mirroring" on in your width and height tile selection in the texture editor. You will see the right next to the picture preview in the texture editor. you should change it to repeat.

To make a long story short though, you should either

A. name each surface differently and assign the texture to each box, ( but I would only do this if each box is going to be different)

B. just clone the boxes in layout so your textures are "pinned" to your object and wont "slide" when you move them.

or C.
Look into using UV maps so that your textures will always stay where you put them.

Suggestion "B" worked, though I really do need to learn "C" as well.

You're a gentleman and a scholar,

Thanks!
