I've been trying to control my betacam (UVW-1800) deck for some time. I have tried connecting my COM port directly to the deck without any luck. I was told that this might be because I didn't have an RS232 to RS422 convertor. I have just bought one and still no luck.
Is anybody using the external control successfully without an SX-8 and with (or without) a RS232/422 convertor.
Anybody now if I should set the COM port to a particullar rate?
Thanks in advance,
J.

I use the 422 on the bob
connect using a "straight cable" the ser port on the bob to a com port on the computer. All this is rs 232.
connect your rs422 deck to one of the vtr connectors of the bob
set deck for ext control
use toaster deck control on T3 or the external controller on T2
I works very good.

Thanks Pete,
I've just bought one (called a Rosetta Stone), but I can't get it to work.
I was wondering if anybody has any experience of using one?

I just connected deck to ext converter
put in tape
add new deck and it worked
no problem in T3
For t2 external controller needs to be setup with which controll you need

mblade,
Get a hold of two programs freely available from Addenda (http://www.addenda.com/software.htm), WSONY II (http://www.addenda.com/INSTALL.EXE) and ComCheck32 (http://www.addenda.com/comchk32.zip)
They will help you diagnose RS-422 problems quickly. The WSONY II will control an external 422 deck directly so you will know you have your cabling and com ports set right. Sometimes a port can be locked up by another program or driver and ComCheck32 will let you know it that is the case.
Lastly, I had lots of trouble with VT2 a build or two back but with VT3 I have had no troubles other than occasionally having to restart VT3 or even reboot if the ports get really hosed up...
Hope that helps,
mblade

Top tips, Bradl!
I tried the Sony software and it worked first time. I then tried VT2 and it also jumped into life.
Thanks for your help.
