View Full Version : Where is the SE2 feature list?
I'm ready to purchase the upgrade today, however, I still have not heard the detailed description of how SE2 will work with my Black Magic Intensity Pro card.
Will I be able to use the card to drive a preview monitor?
Will I be able to directly edit the files in SE2 that are captured with the Black Magic codecs?
Is there a complete explanation of the new SE features anywhere to be read?:hey::deal::thumbsup:

I don't think there's much more detail than what was in the initial news release.

SpeedEDIT 2.0 has not been officially released, when it is a full feature list will be posted. However, I can tell you the SpeedEDIT 2.0 will automatically detect any supported output device such as the Blackmagic Design devices and list it in the "Output" drop down list. Simply select the device you would like to use and SpeedEDIT will output to it. As far as I know as long as the Blackmagic codecs are installed SpeedEDIT should pick them up without any issues. If you have any difficulties with this please file a bug report by following the support link in the SpeedEDIT Start Menu listing.

Like a lot of us I have been anxious to see the new SpeedEDIT release and on it's release I had a look at the manual to see if it included any of the two features I really felt it needed.
These being:
Spline based masking
Various types of mattes
I have to say that I'm very disappointed that neither of these are present in the new $995 SpeedEDIT 2.
I know it isn't a comp tool, but I feel it's a basic requirement to have a good toolset for masking and mattes in a video editor in SpeedEDIT's price range, particularly for shots that require more work than the standard toolset provide.
I just feel it's a real oversight by NewTek and hope that they'll include a decent set of tools in future releases or updates.
What features do you think they missed?

I would also hope for spline-based masking before too long, but am curious - what do you have in mind as far as "Various types of mattes"?

Ones I would like to have at the very least would be,
Difference Mattes, :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
4point, 8point, 16point garbage mattes:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Track Mattes:thumbsup:
Very useful.

Difference matte would be useful. I think the rest is basically covered under spline-based masking tools by definition though. You can usually create splines with as many points as required, and animate them too. Of course, go down this path far enough and you run into dedicated compositors. I wouldn't expect a full blown set of roto tools.

Yes, you can output audio and video using any of the BlackMagic cards. If you have multiple cards installed, it will use the first one detected. I believe priority can be changed in their control panel applet.
If you have a compatible card installed, it should automatically show up in the Output menu as an option.
The output of the card will be the same as the project settings, it does not up/downscale for output, so an appropriate monitor must be connected.
Once enabled, it will remember your choice for the next session or until told otherwise.
It will play both Mov and AVI 8bit BlackMagic files, and a subset of the 10bit files. This is still being addressed.

Ah-ha, yes, you're right about the spline-based masking tools point, however, with those dedicated matte tools, we'd still be able to edit speedily. Geddit? SpeedEDIT.. edit speedily?
Well I thought it was funny.
Point is, spline based for the intricate masking stuff, other matte tools for the quick and easy stuff.
It's the SpeedEDIT way.
