If the recycle bin is active on your video drives, then the files are in there and have not been deleted. Empty the recycle bin and you'll get the space.
Also, if you want to delete a file without sending it to the recycler, then highlight it and press shift-delete.
Personally, I set the recycler to 0% of the hard drive capacity and then disable it completely. Otherwise, it takes up space.

There's also a prefs setting that determines whether or not deleted clips go to the recycle bin or are immediately removed from the drives.

Long shot, but once I had installed some Norton Utility and it installed a Protected File mode to my recycle bin.
Same thing happened to me about deleting and not regaining space. Then when I right clicked on Recycle bin I saw it said 'empty protected files'. Once I did it freed up almost 100gigs worth of stuff. Then I turned off the protection.
just a thought...

Do you have Norton Tools on because
Norton Protected can cause your files to hang around if you have not deleted them in awhile
I hope this helps
