I'm having problems installing the dongle on my Windows XP system. I just spent two hours on the phone with Kurtis of tech support and we got nowhere - he suggested I post my problem here.
Here's what happens:
After going through the initial dongle installation process, the system restarts (with dongle removed). I wait for Windows to boot completely, then I insert the dongle. The New Hardware Found Wizard appears. I've tried both automatic and custom installations, but I get the same problem - as soon as I select the driver and it begins to install, my system crashes and I get a blue screen with this message: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." It then does a memory dump that takes about 5 minutes. The system seems to be fine after it reboots, but I can't get the dongle installed! I've already downloaded the latest driver update from rainbow.com (ssd5411 32 bit) and tried installing it without success. Has anyone had similar problems?
Here are the particulars on my machine:
Pentium 4 @ 2.2 ghz
1 GB of RAM
Windows XP 2002 pro with Service Pak 1 installed
Matrox RTX100 video card
I have an Iomega USB external harddrive installed but it was not connected during installation.
I have Norton System Works 2002 installed along with Bryce, Poser and a bunch of Adobe Applications.
Please help!

The RTX100 card is pretty high strung and can cause all kinds of problems if things aren't exactly right. Your RTX card was working 100% before you tried installation? I would try pulling the RTX card and uninstalling all the drivers, then attempting to add the dongle. I am using the parallel dongle with my system without any install problems but after spending about a week and a half troubleshooting that RTX card to get it to work properly with everything else, I suspect it at the first sign of trouble.

Hi,
Another likely candidate is if you have any startup programmes from Norton System Works running.
Maybe Antivirus or system tools, (like say crashguard(?)) if thats still part of system works.
ps.
Also read threads where if its a USB dongle you also need the parallel dongle drivers installed as well. Suggest you do a search of the forums.

FWIW:
When I install from scratch, after I install the Rainbow/Sentinel drivers and reboot and plug in the dongle, I get the little "found new hardware "popup" on Windows XP Pro. It says it finds a couple of things, the drivers installa nd all this without having to select a driver manually.
Also, I assume by "Windows XP 2002 Pro" you have XP Pro, right?
I don;t know why it is making you shoose a driver when it should actually know where the driver is if the install completed successfully.

I recieved my software yesterday before I went to work. I also had this problem with the USB Dongle not installing and giving me a blue screen. I thought about it and fixed it and now the dongle is found and Lightwave 7.5 installed. How did I do it?
I uninstalled the sentinal drivers and deleted the rainbow technologies folder in the programs folder and restarted the computer. Do Not Install the Dongle Yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After windows restarts insert your Lightwave cd in your cd drive and reinstall the sentinal drivers(Do Not Install the Dongle yet!) After windows installs go to where the sentinal drivers are. Mine where in the C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\Sentinel System Driver find the program called SetupSysDriver.exe right click the file and then click Properities, then click the Compatibility tab. Set the compatibility mode to Windows 2000 and check the Turn off advance text services for this program. Then click apply, then click ok. Now install the dongle and if it asks you what driver you want to install, select the second one. I can't remember what the actual name is but I used the second one. I think it was SNTNLUSB.sys Then after the dongle is found, install Lightwave 7.5 I hope this helps you. :-)

Yeah i had problems with this as well. When I selcted the second one all was fine, although the first time I dine this my system instantly crashed. I unistalled Lightwave and done it again and it was fine.

You might check in the Rainbow directory for 'SetupSysDriver' and run that and see what it tells you. You can stop, repair etc the driver.

I finally got the dongle installed and working on my machine!
After much frustration, I contacted Rainbow Technologies Tech Support. They sent me a Sentinel System Driver Uninstall program via email. After running this program and scrubbing the rest of the computer for Sentinel files (I checked Add/Remove Programs, Windows\System32\Drivers, and the Registry) I rebooted. I then installed Sentinel System Driver version 5.41.1 - 32 bit MSI installer from rainbow.com/support/ESC/asp. I uninstalled Lightwave and then restarted the machine with the dongle out. I then reinstalled Lightwave (standard option) and inserted the dongle when I was prompted. Everything is working. For those who posted, thanks for your suggestions and input.
