don't know if 'officially' tested, but after 1 big project here i can say it is working fine so far! the only issue i had was that i had to activate 'administrator mode' for layout and modeler. i'm running an administrator account anyway, so don't ask me why...

cheers

It's due to UAC. By being an administrator user in the system you don't give automatic administrator level privileges for software when you run them. This is the reason why Windows 7 asks you a permission before you can install any software etc. The difference here is that if you are running a normal user and you'd do something which would require administrator level rights you'd be prompted to type in administrator password to continue. If you are already running an administrator account then you can just click "yes" to provide the privileges to the software.

It's pretty much the same in linux and osx actually: if you belong to the administrators group you don't have the super user rights to do the most important tasks - to do this you need to use terminal and type "su" or use the command "sudo".

This feature is really good for security and I prefer to keep it on. If for some very strange reason you want to deactivate it you can do it: open start-menu and type 'uac'. Open 'User Account Control Settings' and turn the slider all the way down to "Never notify". Done, UAC is deactivated.

I love Windows 7 so far. Lightwave 9.6 64bit is very stable. It'sbrilliant being able to access so much RAM in Layout.

This Administrator malarky is puzzling though. Occasionally a box appears asking for permission with a couple of programs I'm runnng, after running a compatibility check, but no need for any password.

I'm running LW8 on a Windows 7 64bit OS, so far everything seems to be going okay with one exception. When I use the right bracket key ( ] ) to select all polygons, Modeler takes an unusually long time selecting all of the faces. First it selects all of the faces in the Perspective view, then Right, Back and Top.

Any ideas why this might be? On my previous system (Windows 2000 Pro) this was never an issue.

It has always been this way with LW selecting/deselecting things, then refreshing, then selecting another thing, and refreshing.. Nasty (should disable refreshes and do once at end)
But apparently gfx driver in your Windows 2000 is better than the one in Win7, so this takes much less time, not noticeable to eyes.
So, check gfx card driver update on manufacturer website.
You can also check Display Options > GL > Legacy OpenGL toggle, and Buffered/Streamed.

What are your system specs?

Intel i7 860
Win 7 Home Premium x64
4gig Ram
Nvidia GTX 275 896mb
LW 8

I have a work around, zooming out to a great distance so that as the polygons are selected, they are so small to redraw that it does not take as long, but that gets old quickly. Maybe just a quirk of running LW8 in a x64 environment?

Thanks.

Let's see newdogg. You've been around awhile, 2003 - 9 posts - oh 64 bit LW 8 soon.

Really need more info. Has it worked and stopped? Assuming you have the Sentinel Protection software loaded in the correct way?

Did you just switch to Win 7 and can't get LW to work? All possible info is needed.

Am not sure if it is a Win 7 thing or what. I just setup a new workstation with Windows 7 Pro and discovered that I am unable to save any LW scenes. When I save a scene, I keep getting, "A backup copy of the existing scene file could not be created." Have no idea what that means. I save anyway, but then when I re-load the scene I either get a 'Unknown format' error, or an incomplete scene, or LW just hangs.

Mr.Rid, check out whether you have folder
C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Temp\lwhub\.. That's where backup files should be placed. If not, try making it. Just guessing, because I have not seen such message too. Also see in text editor how .LWS looks like..

Thanks Sensei, it's actually in 'C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Temp\lwhub ' in Win 7, but there are no scenes backed up there. Yeah, I am wondering where/how/why LW is trying to save a 'backup scene.'

Am seeing now that the reason for the error was that the drive I was saving to was full.;D I had just cleared a lot of space off the drive but I forgot the files were still taking up space in the trash bin.

I've been running Windows 7 with 64-bit LW 9.6 along with Modeler, modo and Photoshop. Running Kray and FPrime, too. Not an issue so far. Works great. It seems much more responsive during stress than 64-bit XP.

I've fixed it. i had to install LW without installing Sentinel because i already installed 64-bit Sentinel. everything's working perfectly (kinda). Need more 64-bit versions of plug-ins like Realflow.
