The Soviets did indeed test a machine gun in space. It was attached to the Salyut station. As the last crew left, the command fired the gun remotely as the Soyuz started it's decent to Earth. That station did not spin wildly out of control, it did not appear to even move. It was eventually de-orbited into the sea.
