avi files are smaller than some other types. I render things for web as
.mov files then recompress them using sorenson squeeze or sorenson video.
How is it going to be used on the site?

Well, if space is an issue then Divx for AVI's is a good choice. High quality but small file sizes.

I believe though if you want to appeal to a broader audience, more people including mac users will have less of a problem viewing the .mov format. I guess the sorensen codec works but your files won't be as small and good of quality as the divx.

hrgiger: I've found that Sorrenson looks/compresses better for half-sized clips and divx looks/compresses better for fullsized clips.
You can compare at my sight magicanimation.com
These are just divx and all but one is under a meg when uncompressed they would be almost 100meg: magicanimation.com/intubation

At this stage, divx is finally keeping the Mac up to date with PC, so I wouldn't worry about Mac users viewing your clips if you go with divx.

Good to know Zarathrusta.

I just know I've posted Divx clips in the past only to have some angry mac users who couldn't view them. Good to know they're getting up to speed.;)
